Business Continuity Awareness Week Update – Monday 22nd to Friday 26th March 2010

The BCI Australasian Chapter, in conjunction with Continuity Forum, is hosting events in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney to kick-off Business Continuity Awareness Week (BCAW) 2010.  Each event is free to attend, but registration in advance is required, as numbers are limited at each location. 

The main focus of the week is to raise awareness with key audiences and show the growing importance of Business Continuity Management as an integral management tool.  BCI members are invited to attend the events in any location, and also to invite colleagues who you think would also like to attend.  Specific events details are listed below, along with information about a global Webinar organised by the BCI.

PERTH.  Symposium - 22nd March 2010.  8.00am to 12 noon

The West Australia BCI Forum will be officially launched in Perth as part of BCAW.  The launch will be commemorated with a free half-day Symposium at the Burswood Golf Club function centre from 8:00 am to noon.  Speakers include:

  • Dr Andrew Robertson, Director, Disaster Management, Regulation and Planning, Public Health Division, WA Department of Health
  • Mick Doyle, Senior Risk Analyst, WA Treasury Corporation
  • Peter Janus, Risk Manager, Alcoa Worldwide Alumina - Australia
  • Nat Forbes, President of Asia Council, International Association of Emergency Managers

Following the Symposium, there will be 3 half-day workshops on the 22nd and 23rd March (Note - workshop fees apply)

BRISBANE.  22nd March 2010.  4.00pm - 6.00pm

The Queensland’s Forum’s BCAW Event will provide a presentation by Dr Karin Walduck, Executive Manager, ICT Services, State Library of Queensland

“My Business Continuity Journey”

  • What did we have 5 years ago? - Background
  • How did we determine acceptable levels of risk? - Business buy-in
  • Major areas of focus – project activity
  • What did we share or buy or build? – Don’t re-invent
  • Where are we at today? – Learnings

MELBOURNE.  22nd March 2010.  4.00pm - 6.00pm

The Victoria Forum will be holding a panel discussion to discuss business continuity standards and recent related research.  The panelists include: Patrick Ow, Risk Management Advisor, Victorian Managed Insurance Authority and Ken Brandt, Executive Director, Ernst & Young. 

Also included in the discussion for business continuity research will be a survey by Ernst & Young.

CANBERRA.  23rd March 2010.  4.00pm - 6.00pm

The ACT Forum’s BCAW Event will feature a presentation by Mark Sullivan, Coordinator, Governance and Planning, Australian Federal Police

“From Governance to Resilience - A New Paradigm in the Corporate Stewardship of the Australian Federal Police”

  • Stovepipes - strategic oversight of risk, business continuity and business planning
  • A confluence of opportunity - Corporate Change, ISO31000, and P3M3
  • Towards resilience - the new integration of proven methods
  • Hopes and challenges - How will this vision become reality?

SYDNEY.  23rd March 2010.  4.00pm - 6.00pm

The NSW Forum will be conducting a panel discussion on the current business continuity and risk management standards.  The panelists include two representatives from the Standards Australia, Working Group for Business Continuity Management: Jeff Bergman, Founder and Professor Jean Cross, Chair.

BCAW GLOBAL WEBINAR

One step ahead: the BCM advantage” is a global video conference to launch BCAW 2010, kindly sponsored by BT & Polycom.  It will cover the “what”, “why” and “how” of BCM and feature expert views and case studies drawn from 9 countries across 4 continents (including Australia).  You can watch live via the web through registration in advance (places are limited) or a recording on demand after the event.  Watch live and you can put questions to the participants!

Australasian Business Continuity Summit 2010
 
 
 
 

The Business Continuity Summit 2010 will be held in at the Sydney Marriot Hotel between Wednesday 24th and Friday 26th March 2010.  The Summit is the principal annual business continuity event in Australia and New Zealand, and will be the local highlight of Business Continuity Awareness Week 2010. The Summit will take the theme of “resilience over uncertainty, which is a topic that will be of interest to anyone engaged in business continuity management activities.

The Summit agenda will include expert presentations and case studies that will explore and increase understanding of current resilience concepts.  For example, is resilience a “new idea” or an evolution of established business continuity principles?  How resilience can be applied in a practical context?

The Summit will also include a one day Organisational Resilience Workshop, on Friday 26th March 2010, that will provide participants with a detailed understanding of current concepts in organisational resilience research and practice, as well as an awareness of resilience techniques, via case studies and practical tools.

The Business Continuity Summit 2010 will provide an ideal opportunity to meet with resilience experts and experienced business continuity practitioners in an open and informal environment.

2009 Business Continuity Benchmarking 2009 Survey
 
 
 
 

The third Biennial Australia and New Zealand Business Continuity Benchmarking Survey is now available.  The survey was conducted between Continuity Forum and the Australasian Chapter of the Business Continuity Institute earlier this year. The survey was designed for business continuity practitioners across the Australian and New Zealand region to provide an overview of how organisations approach business continuity management.

Cooperation Agreement with Continuity Forum Pty Ltd
 
 
 
 

The BCI Australasian Chapter is pleased to announce a cooperation agreement with Continuity Forum Pty Ltd.  The purpose of this agreement is to encourage information exchange within the membership of both organisations, to ensure better integration of resources and activities and more effective representation of the business continuity industry in the Australia-New Zealand region.

The Business Continuity Institute has published a new document which provides a detail about the six certification standards for professional practitioners.

The document has been prepared as guidance for applicants seeking a professional membership grade of the Institute to enable them to gain further understanding of the competencies required.
